VPN privacy basics: what a VPN can and can’t hide

VPN marketing often promises “complete anonymity” or “military‑grade privacy”. In reality, a VPN is simply one helpful layer in your privacy setup – not a magic invisibility cloak.

What your internet provider sees with and without a VPN

  • Without a VPN: your ISP can see which websites you connect to, when and how much data you use.
  • With a VPN: your ISP can still see that you’re using a VPN, but not which sites you visit.

What websites see with and without a VPN

  • Without a VPN: they see your real IP address, which often points to your approximate location.
  • With a VPN: they see the IP of the VPN server instead – but still know who you are if you log in.

This means a VPN is great for reducing passive tracking and for protecting you on public networks, but it can’t hide actions that are tied to your logged‑in accounts.
